Captain Harrison

Queen of Hearts

Captain Harrison is the ship’s commanding officer whose courteous welcome gives way to the practical demands of an onboard search and a valuable jewel theft. He first appears as host and representative of shipboard authority; later, his questions connect Lady Georgiana Rannoch’s uncertain sighting in the water to the disappearance of Princess Promila’s family heirloom.

Identity and Introduction

At the captain’s table, Harrison welcomes Claire Daniels and Lady Georgiana Rannoch and introduces their companions: Princess Promila and Sir Digby and Lady Porter. His gold-braided uniform marks his position, while his formal welcome makes him the point of contact between the ship’s passengers and its command. The scene also places him among passengers of very different public standing, from a princess to Claire, whom Sir Digby recognizes from her acting career.

The Search at Sea

During the effort to investigate what Georgiana may have seen in the water, Harrison is at the helm while crew members watch from the windows. He hands control to a crew member for one final circle before calling off the search. When Georgiana, dressed as a cat, is brought to him, he recognizes her despite the costume and invites her to sit, acknowledging that the incident must have been distressing. His response combines a measured decision to end the search with attention to the passenger who raised the alarm.

The Missing Ruby

After passengers have been held at their lifeboat station for a roll call, Harrison summons Georgiana to the officers’ quarters. He explains why he cannot simply dismiss her sighting as harmless: two days earlier, the ship had learned that Princess Promila’s large, valuable ruby, the Star of Srinagar, was apparently missing. The princess had not placed it in the ship’s safe; she preferred to wear her jewelry and believed it secure either on her person or in her cabin jewel case. Harrison’s account turns a doubtful shape in the water into part of a wider mystery, while establishing the theft as the reason the ship’s officers are alert to what may have gone overboard.
